The narrow waterways Alleppey are one of the most picturesque locations anywhere in the
world. The palm fringed network of canals, lakes and waterways with glimpses of people
whose lives are shaped water by the around them and a long stretch of beach in Allepey
town make the district the best backwater destination in Kerala. The backwaters of Alleppey
can be best experienced through cruises on traditional "Kettuvallom" or house boats.
Spectacular Snake Boat races are the most significant traditional events in Alleppey. These
spectacular regattas are usually held annually between August and October and involve long
boats powered by up to 120 oarsmen. Alleppey is also a major hub for the coir industry.

Mannarshala Temple Set amidst a dense 16 acre forest grove devoted to serpent worship,
the temple is unique in that the holy rites are presided over by a priestess. The temple also
possesses 30,000 images of snake gods and is the largest of its kind in the state.

Snake boat races Involving 10 boats at a time and manned by 100 120 oarsmen, the
races are the worldlargest team sport event and a must if one is visiting Kerala between
August and September.
